Ceylan Özvatan from Elgar Technology College, Worcester As I am a fairly unorganised person I found my Mentor, Carol, extremely beneficial to me and I feel that she has made a great contribution to the vast progression of my GCSE grades. Before I was given Carol as my Mentor, my forecast grades were a great deal lower than I am capable of due to my lack of organisation which caused me to put off my work, ultimately resulting in very low grades. My target grade for every subject is an A, yet I was being forecast much lower grades with teachers predicting me G grades in both Health and Social Care and Music and D grades in English Language and Literature. My Mentor, Carol, would talk to me about my life in general and also discuss with me the things I needed to complete such as coursework and revision. She then helped me to organise my work in order of priority and broke it down into small, easy to complete pieces by setting me a target to aim for each week. This was very helpful to me as it made organising my work considerably easier. I also feel that Carol’s friendly manner and encouraging attitude towards me helped us to build a successful relationship which made her very easy to talk to and have conversations with about almost anything. A thing that I liked about Carol was that when there were times that I was unable to fully compete a target or goal, she would not focus on that fact that I didn’t achieve it or what I had done wrong but what I could do to complete it successfully for the next week which I found encouraging. Now that my mentoring sessions are over, I have made almost incalculable progression in all of my subject grades. I have now finished Health and Social Care GCSE and have obtained 2 A* grades in the subject. I have been told that my Music coursework is of an A grade standard and that I am to aim for an A overall. My English coursework is an A* grade and I am also predicted an A* in Drama GCSE. I am very proud of myself for what I have achieved and feel that, if it wasn’t for Carol’s encouragement and help with organisation, I would have found my large mass of work much harder to tackle and may not have had such great success. I would like to take this opportunity to say a massive THANK-YOU to her! Ceylan’s tutor is Sam Roach who wrote, “ I am sure that having a mentor has definitely helped her…..having someone to talk with who is not a teacher and impartial to her must have been a great help” June 2007.
Lucy Brown from Baxter College, Kidderminster I came to Mentor Link with learning difficulties and while I’ve been with my mentor it has helped and I am knowing more that I did before I had a mentor.
Daniel Edwards from Bewdley High School, Bewdley “Wilf is a nice bloke and if I am angry I can talk to him. He has helped me with my coursework, calmed me down, helped me talk about things that I normally wouldn’t, and has been a good friend. Wilf is good to have a laugh with, he has made my home life calmer and he comes into school in his own time. Nicki has also calmed me down and stopped me getting into fights.”
Iva Mincheva from Stourport on Severn High School “I’m Iva, I come from Bulgaria and when I came here I didn’t know any English. The people from Mentor Link help me to read better and I’m very happy. They are really nice people and my mentor is called Barbara Cheadle. I really like her, she is very funny and I enjoy reading with her. She explains the words which I don’t know and to me the grammar if I don’t know something.”
Christine Smith from Birchen Coppice Middle School “My mentor Marion encourages me and listens to my problems, we talk and play games together, sometimes she helps me read. Marion is funny and kind; when people pick on me she gives me advice and support. The mentor scheme is good when people need someone to talk to who them can trust."
