A Very BIG THANK YOU to Berni Albrighton for donating her lovely books to raise much needed funds for Mentor Link……..

The Old Man of Tiritiri Matangi

Tiritiri Matangi Island is an island wildlife sanctuary, just off the coast from Auckland, and is one of New Zealand’s most important and exciting conservation projects

With a forward by the great naturalist David Bellamy, who describes the island as the  “flagship of the green renaissance and worth of world heritage status”, the book is complete with details and photographs of the wildlife of the island, and includes sections on the sanctuary itself and the author.

This lovely, beautifully illustrated book tells the story of the island from the perspective of a 950 year old tree, the Old Man of Tiritiri of the title. The lives of the creatures, the landscape itself and the effect of mankind are all woven into the pages in an engaging narrative which will absolutely delight children. The full cycle of life is described including joy and sorrow, new life and death with love and humour running throughout.

The book quietly emphases the importance of conservation, including stories of the reintroduction of native animals, without ever preaching to the reader.
